Lesa Hepburn - Red
Hot Fibre
"Bubble and Squeak"
10 Sept to 9 Oct 99
Lesa Hepburn, paper maker and designer, cooked up a solo exhibition of
natural fibre artworks, including sculptures, lamps, homeware, and installations.
"Bubble and Squeak", described by the artist as "…a hearty meal cooked
up from society's leftovers", was based on the theme of re-use of materials
normally viewed as waste or as weeds.
Of her work in a broad professional sense, Lesa explains that she is
"…working to raise the profile of my art forms within the artistic and
general communities in Queensland. Hand paper making is still frequently
viewed as a hobby or simple craft activity, and not often enough are the
intrinsic aesthetic qualities of hand made paper properly appreciated.
My major effort towards this has been the organisation of the Red Hot
Fibre Show in 1997 and 1998 and the initiation of the Scissors Paper Stone
touring exhibition. These activities have led to the development of a
major biennial exhibition of natural fibre arts."
