Most
of us have seen bins and skips full of materials that are too
good to throw out.... timber, wire, fabrics, vinyl, out-moded
stock. It seems absurd that companies are paying landfill fees
to waste these valuable resources when there are thousands of
people who could use these materials.
Industrial and commercial offcuts, over-runs, left-overs, outdated
stock and seconds that are currently sent to landfill can be
re-used by schools, artists, craftspeople, home handypeople
and the general community - re-use opportunities are limited
only by imagination!
Reverse Garbage was created to help make industrial discards available at low cost for creative
use by the Brisbane community.
We operate
a large retail warehouse at 296 Montague Road, West End, in Brisbane. We
collect a truckload of materials every weekday, so there's always
something new in the warehouse.

In November 1998, Reverse
Garbage Co-op Ltd was registered under the Qld Co-operatives
Act (1997) as a not-for-profit co-operative. We opened our doors
to the public in April 1999.
Reverse Garbage is a not-for-profit worker co-operative. We believe that the people who do
the work should be the ones making the decisions.
Therefore, all of our workers are also members of the co-operative; all of our members
are also directors and all of our directors must also be workers.
We operate use a consensus decision-making model.
Currently the Directors of Reverse Garbage are Bill Ennals, Lisa Owen, Samantha Hadnutt, Lyn Graham and Doug Pender.
Reverse Garbage was initiated to support Friends of the Earth - Brisbane, although
both remain separate, independent organisations. Any surplus
funds generated from the re-sale of discards are used for
the environmental education work of Friends of the Earth - Brisbane.
